About Me – A Neurodiversity-
Affirming Counsellor in Chorley, Lancashire

Dec profile2.jpg

Hello, I’m Ruth Taylor, a qualified and experienced BACP accredited counsellor and founder of Amethyst Counselling in Chorley, Lancashire, with lived experience of neurodiversity.

I offer a warm, non-judgemental space where you can explore your challenges safely and at your own pace. My practice is both trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, meaning I work from the belief that every mind is unique — not broken or wrong, just different.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, burnout, bereavement, or low self-esteem, my aim is to help you reconnect with your strengths and find steadiness again.

My Approach

My work is rooted in person-centred therapy, which means you are at the heart of every session. I’ll listen deeply and help you make sense of what’s happening, offering gentle guidance and strategies where needed.

I integrate tools from:

  • Mindfulness and grounding techniques

  • Compassion-focused approaches

  • Psychoeducation about stress, trauma, and neurodiversity

  • Creative or reflective exercises when helpful

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

Each session is tailored to you — your pace, your needs, and your way of processing the world.

Working with Neurodivergence

I have a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent adults (including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and/or sensory sensitivities) and people who are exploring their neurotype later in life.  I have lived experience of this myself.

I understand that traditional therapy styles don’t always fit everyone, so I adapt how I work — from communication preferences to sensory comfort — to help you feel safe and seen.

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood, “too much,” or “not enough,” this space is designed to be different: a place where you can just be yourself.

My Experience & Training

I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), working within their ethical framework.

My background includes experience supporting people through:

  • Generalised anxiety and stress

  • Post-traumatic growth and recovery

  • Bereavement and loss

  • Self-esteem and identity challenges

  • Life transitions and burnout

Continuous professional development is important to me — I regularly train in trauma and neurodiversity-informed practice to ensure my work remains current and inclusive.

A Little About Me

Outside of counselling, I value quiet time in nature, creative projects, and mindfulness practice. I bring that same grounded, compassionate energy into my therapy work.

Location

I offer in-person sessions in Chorley (PR6), as well as online counselling throughout the UK.
